Stunning Modern Farmhouse Kitchen Remodel

When one of my friends recently asked me for design advice before starting a major kitchen renovation, I was more than happy to lend a helping hand. My friends were planning a complete gut job and overhaul of their kitchen space. The renovation was going to involve all new appliances, new cabinets, new ceiling, new countertops, basically new everything!

Going into this renovation, the goal was to create a real chef’s kitchen, one that is designed and equipped to satisfy the needs of a professional chef. In his spare time, my friend’s husband loves to cook! I mean he can “throwdown” like Bobby Flay and whip up a flambé like Julia Child! So they wanted a high end professional space where “Bobby” can cook up some chateaubriand with béarnaise sauce, but also relax with family.

Typically, a chef’s kitchen will include the following features:

  • Space for multiple people to cook and prepare food comfortably at the same time
  • High-end refrigerator and freezer with ample space and features to keep food fresher longer
  • A gas cook range that operates with higher-than-usual Btu, or British thermal unit, which allows for larger, hotter flames. Many chef’s kitchen ranges also include a grill or griddle
  • Multiple ovens, including convection or steam models for quicker, more efficient cooking
  • Warming drawers or shelf to keep food hot
  • More than one sink for washing food, vegetables, and dishes conveniently.

Their kitchen space was lacking in all these areas, let’s take a look at the before renovation pictures.

IMG_6285The kitchen includes a desk area, while useful..it typically ends up being the landing area for mail and junk. This area is precious real estate that can be better utilized.

IMG_6286The refrigerator is not conveniently located…directly next to the wall ovens? Really? What are builders thinking when they design like this, and the trashcans definitely have to be built into the cabinets.

IMG_6287Microwaves are wonderful, we all have them….maybe we can hide this one to make room for a massive range hood!

IMG_6288The lower cabinets stop where the sink ends…more precious real estate. Let’s make better use of this space and continue the cabinets to the end of the wall.

IMG_6289Wouldn’t cabinets to the ceiling look beautiful in this space?

The large picture window is pretty and provides a lot of natural light, but that double sink has to go! Farmhouse sink??? Most definitely!

The remodel took 9 weeks but man…was it worth the wait!! The kitchen is gorgeous!

fullsizeoutput_75ccBeautiful white shaker cabinets extending to the ceiling and a white ceramic farmhouse sink give this room a very modern farmhouse look and feel. The room is so bright and feels so spacious. Adding a coffered ceiling makes the room feel much larger and the sleek pendants add the perfect amount of light over the island.

IMG_5066The desk is gone and a new larger refrigerator is installed in a better location. It is encased with cabinets that have more useable storage and pull out drawers.

IMG_5067The wall ovens are gone, adding plenty of countertop space and additional cabinets.

IMG_5068The cooktop was replaced with a 48″ Thermador beast and range hood. A warming shelf was added to the wall to make this a true chef’s kitchen.

fullsizeoutput_75d4Isn’t this glass backsplash beautiful? Under cabinet lighting was also added to the space.

IMG_5071The cabinets were extended to the end of the wall and a wine refrigerator was added to the space. Glass cabinets with glass shelving were added to this “cocktail” area.

Isn’t the granite to die for? Yes that’s right, it is granite…with gorgeous gray and white veining.

fullsizeoutput_75d2Long pulls give the room a sleek and modern feel.

fullsizeoutput_75d0A new stainless steel faucet is the perfect compliment to the farmhouse sink.

fullsizeoutput_75d6The microwave is now hidden in the island but still very accessible.

IMG_5065The island was extended to allow seating for 4 and now includes a vegetable sink and plenty of storage space.

Lastly, the hardwood floors were sanded and re-stained to a darker modern finish.

The renovation turned out so beautiful, and the space is perfect and functional in every way. I am so thrilled for my friends that they got the chef’s kitchen they dreamed of and get to enjoy it everyday, and it warms my heart that I was able to contribute and be a part of designing their dream kitchen 🙂

  1. Absolutely brilliant! You would have no way of knowing this, but my “day job” is in the appliance industry; and this is one of the most beautiful transformations I’ve seen! I’ll share and follow in my little corner of the world. Really stunning!

    1. Hi Shelly, sorry I never replied, I was waiting to hear back on the granite and have not, sorry I don’t know the name.

  2. Hello, Question for you, Any idea on the make and model of the 48″ warming rack? And where it was purchased?
