When one of my friends recently asked me for design advice before starting a major kitchen renovation, I was more than happy to lend a helping hand. My friends were planning a complete gut job and overhaul of their kitchen space. The renovation was going to involve all new appliances, new cabinets, new ceiling, new countertops, basically new everything!
Going into this renovation, the goal was to create a real chef’s kitchen, one that is designed and equipped to satisfy the needs of a professional chef. In his spare time, my friend’s husband loves to cook! I mean he can “throwdown” like Bobby Flay and whip up a flambé like Julia Child! So they wanted a high end professional space where “Bobby” can cook up some chateaubriand with béarnaise sauce, but also relax with family.
Typically, a chef’s kitchen will include the following features:
- Space for multiple people to cook and prepare food comfortably at the same time
- High-end refrigerator and freezer with ample space and features to keep food fresher longer
- A gas cook range that operates with higher-than-usual Btu, or British thermal unit, which allows for larger, hotter flames. Many chef’s kitchen ranges also include a grill or griddle
- Multiple ovens, including convection or steam models for quicker, more efficient cooking
- Warming drawers or shelf to keep food hot
- More than one sink for washing food, vegetables, and dishes conveniently.
Their kitchen space was lacking in all these areas, let’s take a look at the before renovation pictures.
The large picture window is pretty and provides a lot of natural light, but that double sink has to go! Farmhouse sink??? Most definitely!
The remodel took 9 weeks but man…was it worth the wait!! The kitchen is gorgeous!
Isn’t the granite to die for? Yes that’s right, it is granite…with gorgeous gray and white veining.
Lastly, the hardwood floors were sanded and re-stained to a darker modern finish.
The renovation turned out so beautiful, and the space is perfect and functional in every way. I am so thrilled for my friends that they got the chef’s kitchen they dreamed of and get to enjoy it everyday, and it warms my heart that I was able to contribute and be a part of designing their dream kitchen 🙂
