Recently, Houzz published an article about Home Design Trends on the Rise and I realized that our home has many of these ideas.
I want to share some of these popular design trends that I read about but also add in a few other unique features about our home. I’m not trying to imply that our home is on the cutting edge of home design by any means, in fact we have done so many renovation projects in our home over the last three years..it makes my head spin. But many of the design ideas I am sharing about our home are original to the home and were installed by the builder in 2005.

1.) Herringbone Pattern – The herringbone pattern is trending big time. The zig zag pattern is being used on hardwood flooring, outdoor tiles and pavers, kitchen backsplashes, mudroom floors, bathrooms, even walls…just about anywhere you want to make a statement.
These brick pavers were installed by our builder and are located at our front entrance door and on two front porch patios.
2.) Electrical bar under the cabinets – I love this home idea the builder installed. The hidden feature keeps those unsightly electrical outlets from taking up valuable backsplash space. The look is clean without any distractions of outlet covers.
Placing electrical strips under the island countertop instead of inside the wood cabinetry is also a seamless and attractive look.
3.) Backsplash Slab – Speaking of backsplashes, that leads me into another popular trend. Having the backsplash the same stone as the counter, and using a slab instead of tiles. I have been seeing a lot of this lately in new construction and remodels.
4.) Under Counter Microwave – Having a built in microwave is very nice and having it out is sight is twice as nice.
5.) Electrical Outlets built into the Base Moldings – LOVE this one! Another great idea! Instead of having outlets on the wall every few feet, our outlets are located in the base moldings leaving the walls free and clear. Many newer outlets have USB ports which allows you to connect an iPhone charger to the outlet.
6.) Bathroom Seating or Deep Ledge – This is a very nice feature in my daughter’s bathroom. It can be used to hold products, used as seating, or to shave your legs.
7.) Pink Tiles are coming back! Yes they are, I read about it on Houzz, so it must be true 😉 Ok so they probably won’t be 12″ x 12″ marble tiles with crystals inserts but expect to see more pink bathrooms in the future.
As I mentioned earlier, this is my daughter’s bathroom and it has a lot going on, pink walls, crystal chandelier, pink marble and iron vanity…yea…this bathroom deserves its own separate blog post. I haven’t even touched on the top floor of our home on my blog – that’s a whole other story! Stay tuned…we are finally getting around to renovating the bedrooms!
8.) Double Shower Heads – This trend has been around for a while and seems to have staying power. My son’s bathroom has double shower heads. It also acts as the bathroom to the guest bedroom, which we are using as a game room.
9.) Fully Wrapped Bathrooms – We renovated our powder room and fully planked all the walls, check out Modern Farmhouse Powder Room Remodel Using Planked Boards.
10.) Dining Rooms that are Actually Being Used – According to Houzz, dining rooms are popular again and getting used more often. People are realizing the importance of family time and using the space to connect with loved ones. We love our dining room and recently renovated the space – Dining Room Renovation “ORC Final Reveal” Featuring a Mother’s Day Tablescape
